Permit Technicians 2024v2

If you are planning a construction project in the City of Yuma that involves any type of new construction, remodel, electrical, mechanical, or plumbing type work, a permit and inspection are generally required. While some minor construction activities don’t require permits, most projects do.

The Building Safety Division in the City of Yuma Department of Community Development can assist you with the required steps for obtaining a permit and scheduling inspections. We can also inform you about types of work that do not require permits such as fencing, painting, and/or minor repairs.

When applying in person, a permit application, accompanied by construction plans, is required to be submitted to the City of Yuma Department of Community Development for review prior to permit issuance. Visit our Forms and Application page to find the specific one you need for your project. If you are applying online through the Development Portal most types of permits will not require that you submit the actual application form.

In general, review times for residential type projects are 5 work days and commercial projects are 15 work days. Review the Permit Time Frames document for more specific details about other project types. Permit Fees must be paid and a permit issued prior to the commencement of construction.  Once the permit is issued, inspections are required for the different disciplines of the construction. All work must be inspected prior to covering and moving on to the next step. When calling for inspections, please plan on a 24-hour response time from our field inspectors. All calls for inspections that are received prior to 3 p.m. will be scheduled for inspection the next business day. Once the construction is complete and all required inspections have been completed and approved, the building official will issue a Certificate of Occupancy. There shall be no occupancy to any building or structure until this certificate is issued.

As of January 9, 2019 the City of Yuma has updated its Standards for Encroachment of Structures Into the Public Right-of-Way. Residents may review the Small Cell Standards here: City of Yuma Small Cell Standards
