About the Yuma Art Center

Our vision is for all members of our community to live creative lives by being a part of the arts in Yuma.

The City of Yuma Parks and Recreation Department  manages the Yuma Art Center in Historic Downtown Yuma. The Yuma Art Center advances the arts by providing distinct opportunities for community participation and artistic growth.  With over 100,000 visitors each year, the Yuma Art Center annually produces several theatre productions, over twenty visual art exhibitions, holds nearly fifty unique performing and visual arts classes, facilitates the annual summer mural program, screens dozens of films, supports the North End Artists Cooperative, coordinates festivals and special events, and advances public art throughout Yuma. Advocacy is strengthened through the City of Yuma Parks, Arts and Culture Commission .

Due to the COVID 19 pandemic, Yuma Art Center is currently closed and all events and programs have been postponed or cancelled. Below is the projected reopening plan with the optimistic date of August 11, 2020.

The Yuma Art Center is preparing to welcome the community back to the facility. As we navigate the reopening process, know that the health and safety of our visitors and staff is our central focus. Advanced appointments will be needed to enter and view the gallery exhibits and gift shop. Tickets will be available for online reservations in one week installments, beginning with our projected reopening date of August 11, 2020.

Guidelines to a safe and excellent experience:
·Face coverings are required for visitors and staff. Face coverings must cover both nose and mouth at all times while inside the facility.
·A limited amount of visitors will be allowed in the galleries at a single time and social distancing will be encouraged.
·The gift shop and restrooms will be available for visitors.
·Hand sanitizer will be available for visitors.
·The facility will receive regular and frequent cleaning between visits.
·Please do not come to the center if you are not feeling well or exhibiting any symptoms related to COVID-19 (including fever, cough, chills, etc).
·Remember that you should never touch art when at a museum-- let’s keep the art safe too!

Although visiting the center is completely free, donations of any amount are accepted and greatly appreciated. Now more than ever the Yuma Art Center needs your support to continue our mission of providing unique arts opportunities to the community. Please consider a donation to the arts when make a reservation.  The Historic Yuma Theatre will remained closed to the public, but now is a great opportunity to contribute to our Adopt a Chair fund to ensure the theatre stays standing for another 100 years.  If you are interested in a donation to the center or to learn about our sponsorship opportunties, please contact Arts and Culture Program Manager, Lindsay Benacka at lindsay.benacka@yumaaz.gov. Heroes United:

Featuring artwork by Vincent Alvendia, Ryan Cody, Zybrena Crawford, Day Antone Duran, Thomas Fernandez, Tyler Ledwell, Magnus Titanium, Amelie Nash, Jojo Seames, and Melissa Yee.

Inverted Perspective:
Drawings by Luke Kruse

This collection of drawings is meant to inspire others to open their minds and view art from a new and unusual perspective. While the drawings themselves may seem confusing and abstract at first, by inverting the colors through a smartphone camera, one can see the final product that was there in front of them all along. Through a technological medium, red can become blue, white can become black, and the true image of amazing characters, heroes, settings, and posters will be brought to life. These drawings are meant to illustrate how art and wonder can be found all throughout our world. All we need to do is view our world from different perspectives with open minds.

Yuma Art Center features:

  • The 643 seat Historic Yuma Theatre which dates to 1912
  • The restored United Building featuring the North End Artists Cooperative
  • Four Visual Art Galleries
  • Multipurpose Classrooms and Artist Studios
  • Pottery Studio
  • Artisan Gift Shop
  • Black and White Photography Darkroom

MOMO Artist Residency

The Yuma Art Center has a new look thanks to MOMO and his crew of Lynnea Holland-Weiss and Dan Bortz who created this large-scale mural on the building's back, west-facing wall. MOMO specializes in creating artpieces in public spaces, using handmade tools to design and install murals. His works can be seen worldwide and are notably in the Miami Dolphin Stadium, Facebook Headquarters in San Franciso and in Sydney, Australia.

The mural proposal, shown in the photo, was approved by the City's Design and Historic Review Commission; the Parks, Arts and Recreation Commission; and the Ad-Hoc Public Art Committee. The artwork was privately funded by the McKivergan family, and the artist's residency was also supported by the Historic Coronado Hotel, LG Paint and Sun Rentals.

In addition to the commissioned mural, Momo created 11 additional works of art around Yuma identified in this brochure.
