Councilmember Ema Lea Shoop has both been appointed to a term on the Yuma City Council, and elected to a total of five additional four-year City Council terms. Her most recent term began with her inauguration on Jan. 3, 2020.
She has been an active community member since moving to Yuma with her late husband Dr. Lewis Shoop in 1960. Councilmember Shoop has served on multiple non-profit boards including the Arizona Agriculture Employment Relations Board, the Arizona Rural Water Association, and the Governor’s Task Force on Parks and Recreation.
She co-founded Yuma Leadership, Inc. and Yuma Youth Leadership, two entities dedicated to helping young students build skills to be successful individuals. Councilmember Shoop is an active member of the sorority Beta Sigma Phi.
Her two sons Michael, a lawman, and Kim, a marketing executive, are both proud Kofa High School graduates. Her huband, Dr. Shoop, was the director of Guidance and Counseling at Kofa High School for many years. Councilmember Shoop has five children and four great-grandchildren.
