Firefighting in today's society is both challenging and exciting and offers a highly rewarding community service career. City of Yuma firefighters also have great benefits, which includes a retirement system that offers retirement with 25 years of service. If you are interested in becoming a City of Yuma firefighter, you must meet the following minimum qualifications:

  • A high school diploma or a GED
  • Preferred for next recruitment: a Firefighter I and II, Arizona Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) or National Registry, Hazmat First Responder Operations and CPR certification
  • A valid Driver's License and a good driving record

Applicants who meet the above criteria must also pass written and oral skills testing, a physical ability test, and a medical examination.You may apply on line at the City of Yuma's website or if you do not have access to the internet, computers are available to the public in the City of Yuma Human Resources Department lobby.

Application Process
Do I apply online? Yes — all applications must be submitted via NeoGov.com. Paper or in-person submissions will not be accepted.

What is the QR code on the flyer for? Scan the QR code to sign up for job alerts through the City of Yuma’s site. Select Fire/EMS, enter your email, and get notified when applications open.

Basic Requirements to Apply:
• Must be 18 years or older
• High school diploma or GED
• Valid Arizona driver’s license with a good driving record
• Ability to pass the Candidate Physical Ability Test (CPAT)
• Ability to obtain Firefighter I & II certifications before academy graduation
• Must pass a respirator medical evaluation (CFR 1910.134)
• Must meet NFPA 1582 Chapter 5.1 essential job tasks

Do I need the CPAT before applying? No — CPAT testing is scheduled after you pass the written exam.

Is there an age limit to apply? No, there is no upper age restriction.
Testing Process

What happens after I apply? Applications are reviewed after the deadline. Qualified candidates are invited to the written test in early September.

Is the written test in person? Yes. It will be offered on two different dates — you choose which day works best.

What’s on the written test? Aptitude-based questions covering:
• Reading comprehension
• Logical reasoning
• Basic math
• Teamwork scenarios

What is the Candidate Physical Ability (CPAT) test like? CPAT is a pass/fail exam. You’ll have 8 weeks to train. Up to 8 practice sessions will be held on Saturdays.

Academy and Training
Already an EMT? All recruits must complete/pass the Yuma Fire EMT course — even if you are already certified.

Already have your Firefighter I & II / Hazmat Operations?
All recruits must complete/pass the Yuma Fire Academy – even if you have the certification.

Does EMT certification give you preference? No. It does not influence your application ranking.

Hiring Timeline
From application to academy start, the hiring process takes approximately 5–6 months.
