Main Street Water Treatment Plant

The Main Street Water Treatment Plant has been producing drinking water for the Yuma area since 1892.  It is thought to be one of the first water treatment plants west of the Mississippi River to filter its water. This facility uses a conventional surface water treatment process. Water from the Colorado River goes through a series of treatment steps to remove impurities and ensure it is safe to drink before being distributed to the community. This plant can produce up to 40 million gallons daily (MGD).

Agua Viva Water Treatment Facility

The Agua Viva Water Treatment Facility began operations in 1983 with a production capacity of 1 million gallons per day (MGD). In 2009, a major expansion significantly increased its capabilities. Today, the plant can produce up to 29 MGD, 20 MGD through surface water and 9 MGD through groundwater supplied by three wells, each capable of producing 3 MGD. The facility features advanced treatment technologies and its flexible design allows it to treat surface water, groundwater or a blend of both, delivering clean, reliable drinking water to the community.

Groundwater Treatment at Agua Viva

  1. Water is pumped from underground wells.
  2. Chlorine is added and the water undergoes treatment to remove iron and manganese.
  3. It is stored in tanks, followed by a final disinfection step before entering the city’s water system.

Surface Water Treatment at Agua Viva

  1. Raw water is pre-screened using a 500-micron filter.
  2. Alum is added to help coagulate and remove particles.
  3. The water flows through an ultra-filtration membrane system for advanced purification.
  4. Fluoride is added to support dental health.
  5. The treated water is then stored, disinfected, and distributed throughout the community.
