In order to protect the City's water distribution system, the City of Yuma's Cross Connection Control Section oversees the installation, testing and maintenance of the approximately 3,800 backflow prevention assemblies currently installed in the City of Yuma.

Although it is the customer's responsibility to maintain backflow prevention assemblies, the City of Yuma's Cross Connection Control Section staff works closely with contractors to assure that proper backflow prevention assemblies are installed and are tested annually.

If you have any questions regarding Backflow Prevention please feel free to contact a Cross Connection Control Specialist at 928-373-4632.

Backflow Regulations

Certified technician testing a backflow prevention device The City of Yuma enforces Article III – Backflow Prevention Regulation (Ordinance No. 2568) to protect our public water system from contamination. This ordinance requires the installation, testing, and maintenance of approved backflow prevention assemblies on certain water service connections where cross-connections may pose a risk. Property owners and contractors are responsible for ensuring that all backflow devices meet City of Yuma standards and are tested annually by a certified backflow tester.

Compliance with this ordinance helps maintain the safety and quality of City of Yuma’s drinking water for all residents.

City of Yuma Registered Backflow Testers

Close-up of a backflow prevention assembly installed on a water line The Arizona Administration Code Title 18 Chapter 5 requires water users at locations where backflow prevention assemblies are installed to annually test them. This testing must be performed by a backflow assemblies tester who is certified by the State of Arizona and registered with the City of Yuma Cross Connection Control Section.

If you want to verify that the tester you are using is recognized, see a compiled list of approved registered testers in our area here(This list is for informational purposes only and should not be construed as a complete list or an endorsement by the City of Yuma).

To become a registered tester, please visit the online tester registration portal, and provide the required information to set up a tester account. To register you will need to provide the following:

  • A copy of current backflow assembly general tester certification
  • Up to date test gauge calibration information.

If you have any questions about the tester registration process, please call SwiftComply at 619-304-6022.

City of Yuma Construction Standards

To help protect Yuma’s drinking water, all backflow prevention assemblies must be installed and maintained according to the City of Yuma Construction Standards. These standards provide clear guidance for residents, contractors, and developers on approved assemblies. Whether you’re replacing an existing backflow assembly or installing a new one, following these standards ensures compliance with city code and helps keep our water system safe.
