The OIT Programs gives trainee operators the opportunity to:

• Apply classroom knowledge directly to daily field and plant operations
• Learn the skills, responsibilities, and safety practices required to operate and maintain complex treatment systems
• Build a strong foundation for long-term career advancement in the utilities field

This apprenticeship pathway supports career development in four key areas:

• Water Treatment Operations
• Wastewater Treatment Operations
• Water Distribution Systems
• Wastewater Collection Systems

The program follows a 24-month training matrix, which provides a clear roadmap for trainees. The matrix ensures participants:

• Study relevant and progressive coursework
• Develop skills aligned with operational standards
• Receive consistent, measurable training milestones

Trainees are expected to follow the matrix as outlined to remain on track for program completion. Adjustments may be made with written approval from the Division Manager.

The City of Yuma offers two apprenticeship tracks:

Treatment Apprenticeship

• This pathway offers hands-on training in both water and wastewater treatment operations within our plant facilities.

Distribution and Collections Apprenticeship

• This pathway focuses on the city's water distribution and wastewater collections systems, working directly with pipelines and conveyance infrastructure.

Entry into the OIT Apprenticeship Program requires applying through the City of Yuma’s official hiring process. Candidates cannot enroll directly into the program.

Participation in the Cross-Training Program is completely voluntary. Employees interested in joining are encouraged to:

1. Speak with their Division Manager to discuss scheduling and rotation opportunities.
2. Request a hard copy of the Cross-Training Program Guidebook from the Administration front office.
