East Mesa Community Park

The construction of East Mesa Community Park is underway. This first phase is approximately 22 acres and features a 2-acre lake, fishing pads, a loop trail, a modest amphitheater, picnicking opportunities, restrooms, parking, and a large-scale inclusive playground. This phase is expected to be completed in the Spring of 2026.

Future phases include a dog park, soccer fields, basketball courts, tennis courts, pickleball courts, a mini pitch (Futsal), outdoor fitness space, associated parking, and a maintenance facility.

History of Site

This parcel was specifically purchased for the use of a park. A portion of the purchase was funded through development fees in response to the rapid development experienced on the city's east side.

The concept of a large-scale park on the east side of the City has been discussed for many years. East Mesa Community Park first appeared in the 2016 Parks Master Plan. Some years later, the park became part of the City Council's strategic goals. The desire for a community park to serve this area of the City was also strongly expressed by Yuma residents as part of the 2024 Parks/Arts/Recreation/Trails master planning process.

Groundbreaking

The City of Yuma hosted a groundbreaking ceremony for East Mesa Community Park on Friday, January 10, 2025, at 3 p.m. The event took place at the future park site (Avenue 6E and 36th St.), marking a significant step in enhancing recreational opportunities for the community.

The public was invited to attend the ceremony, which included remarks from Mayor Doug Nicholls, Parks and Recreation Director Eric Urfer, and others. Light refreshments accompanied the event. Spanning 20+ acres, the first phase of the East Mesa Community Park was designed to offer a wide range of amenities, including a 2-acre lake, a large-scale playground, a walking path, picnic areas, restrooms, and a modest amphitheater. Phase one of the project also focused on building the irrigation infrastructure to support future phases.
