Community Risk Reduction

Community Risk Reduction in the City of Yuma consists of four elements: engineering, education, enforcement, and evaluation. The division is responsible for construction plan review, public education, fire inspections, and fire origin and cause investigations. The mission is to increase safety education and fire code compliance, while reducing the number of injuries and deaths caused by fire.

The division achieves this mission through a targeted property maintenance program for commercial fire inspections, after incident investigations, focused public education programs to include all age groups, and the administration of fire protection and safety grants for the installation of smoke alarms and residential Knox Boxes in homes. This division is also actively involved in pre-development issues, to ensure public safety is incorporated before problems occur in construction phases. The division also provides training and education to juveniles who are referred to us due to their firesetting behavior.
