Tribute of the Muses Awards coming Oct. 11
Tribute of the Muses 2019

It’s almost time again for the biggest night of the year in the local arts community: The 2019 Tribute of the Muses Awards ceremony will take place 7 p.m. Friday, Oct. 11 at the Historic Yuma Theatre, 254 S. Main St.

Tribute of the Muses honors an outstanding member of Yuma’s arts community who has shown exemplary devotion and excellence in the arts over at least 5 years. Winners range among artists, performers, educators, advocates and patrons. Nine entries have been nominated.

Seven additional nominees will vie for the Helios Award, presented to an individual who is a recognized up-and-coming voice within the Yuma arts community. Nominees may reflect acknowledged excellence in a chosen arts field, arts advocacy, arts philanthropy and/or arts education.

“Tribute of the Muses is a great night of all things local art,” said Arts and Culture Program Manager Lindsay Benacka. “Yuma’s arts community is exploding right now and this event is aimed to shine a light on those making it all happen while celebrating some major accomplishments in the creative sector.”

Everyone is invited to attend the award ceremony, with its theme Arabian Nights. Formal attire is encouraged, with black tie optional. Admission to the ceremony is free.

Following the awards ceremony, the reception –a ticketed donation going toward local arts programming – will take place at the Yuma Art Center galleries. Tickets to the after party are $25 per person and available at www.YumaShowTickets.com or any City of Yuma ticketing outlet.

“This event is the only fundraiser we do each year,” Benacka said. “All funds donated during the event will go directly to supporting our programs at the Yuma Art Center. Historically funds have been turned right back around to local artists as prize monies for art shows and other programs.”

The after party will feature a silent art auction that will have over 50 pieces of art created and donated by local artists. “It’s a great way to help support the arts financially and also by taking home a piece of local art,” she said.

The recipient of the Tribute of the Muses Award will be honored with a custom art award designed and created by a local artist. The artist to commission the 2019 Tribute of the Muses Award is Julia Aubrey for her design of “A-Muse-Ing,” a sculpture made from a gourd, wood, acrylic paint and ink dye.

Also at the ceremony, the Arizona Citizens for the Arts Executive Director Joseph Benesh will present Rep. Charlene Fernandez with an Arts Champion Award.

Tribute of the Muses and Helios honorees are nominated by the public and are selected by the City of Yuma’s Parks, Arts and Recreation Commission.
