Road Report, April 21

A weekly list of City projects or encroachment permits authorized by the City of Yuma affecting busy streets.

16th St., 4th Ave.

Construction for the 16th Street and 4th Avenue intersection improvements project could begin as soon as May 2. The project zone includes 4th Avenue between 15th Street and 17th Street, and 16th Street between 2nd Avenue and 6th Avenue. Improvements will consist of dual left-turn lanes and dedicated right-turn lanes at all four legs of the intersection and bike lanes as identified within the transportation element of the voter-approved General Plan. The project also includes waterline replacement and water system infrastructure upgrades.

The City asks all motorists to be aware of this project and to begin planning ahead. This means leaving earlier, and/or picking an alternate route away from the construction zone, such as 24th Street, 8th Street or 32nd Street for east-west through traffic, and Arizona Avenue, Avenue A , Pacific Avenue or Avenue B for north-south through traffic. Motorists using neighborhood streets are expected to respect and obey the 25 mph residential speed limits and school zones in the area.

Access to businesses in the immediate vicinity will be maintained at all times.

32nd Street slurry seal

Again this Saturday, April 23, 32nd Street will be restricted to one lane of through traffic in each direction (eastbound/westbound) during morning and afternoon hours between Avenue A and Catalina Drive in the Big Curve/Southgate area. Work will take place in the center lanes, primarily. Some turn restrictions may be in place during work hours.

32nd Street turn lane at Avenue 5E

The week of April 25-29, the right eastbound lane of 32nd Street will be closed in the approach to Avenue 5E for work in the existing shoulder, creating a right-turn lane.

4th Avenue, 24th Street

There will be several road closures, sidewalk closures and reduced speed limits in place for an improvement project at a commercial area of 4th Avenue and 24th Street. All work will be done between 9 p.m. and 5 a.m. Signs will be posted in the area to alert drivers of detours/closures.

The right northbound lane of 4th Avenue will be closed between 22nd Street and 20th Street. There will be sidewalk closures and reduced lanes near the intersection of 22nd Street and 4th Avenue. Additionally, there will be a partial lane closure on 24th Street between 8th Avenue and 4th Avenue, as well as on a portion of 6th Avenue near its intersection with 24th Street.

Also, 20th Place and 21st Street will be closed to through traffic near each street's intersection with 4th Avenue. Traffic can detour using 20th Street, 21st Street or 22nd Street. The project is scheduled to be completed by mid-May.

10th Street Alley Sewer Project

Crews have begun work on the 10th Street Alley Sewer Project. The project requires the closure of 5th Street and 6th Street, from 10th Avenue to Avenue A.

Downtown Waterline Replacement

A Capital Improvement Project (CIP) to replace existing six-inch waterlines with new six-inch waterlines is under way and will lead to several road closures in the area of 1st Street on the north side of town. The multi-phase project will be located in several areas: on 15th Avenue, south of 1st Street; on 13th Avenue, from 1st Street to Colorado Street; on 9th Avenue, from 1st Street to 2nd Street; on 7th Avenue, from 1st Street to 3rd Street; and in the alley located between 2nd and 3rd Street.

The first two phases of the project will consist of fusing, boring and paving 8th and 7th avenues, near their intersection with 1st Street. Next, crews will begin working on the alleys on 5th and 6th avenues. During the final phases, work along 9th, 13th and 15th avenues is scheduled to take place and be completed by early May.

Additionally, crews will be replacing pavement, installing new water services, fire hydrants, sidewalk, curbside and gutters. Streets will be limited to local traffic only. The total project is scheduled to last a total 120 days, with work anticipated to occur Monday through Thursday during the week.

1st Street, Main to Gila

Sewer line repair work will continue to keep a center section of 1st Street closed between Main Street and Gila Street while crews await replacement parts. One lane of traffic is open in each direction. Maiden Lane traffic looking to turn westbound onto 1st Street should detour to either Main Street or Madison Avenue.

1st Avenue, 40th Street

Crews will be working to relocate an existing pole and underground electrical facilities off of 40th Street near its intersection with 1st Avenue, beginning Feb. 23. The project will lead to a lane closure along 40th Street near its intersection with 1st Avenue. Traffic traveling in each direction will be directed to keep right. A reduced speed limit will be enforced and cones will be in place to guide traffic through the narrowed lanes. The project is scheduled to be completed by end of April.

U.S. 95 at Fortuna Wash - ADOT

Work is under way on the $9.3 million bridge on U.S. Highway 95 spanning Fortuna Wash northeast of Yuma and is expected to be completed by next winter. The bridge, partially funded through a $3.2 million federal grant ADOT received in 2011, is going in at milepost 34, approximately 12 miles northeast of Yuma and 10 miles south of the turnoff (Imperial Dam Road) to Yuma Proving Ground. Crews are scheduled to work on the Fortuna Wash bridge project during weekdays between 6 a.m. and 4 p.m. Initial work will include setting up a temporary detour road and tree removals, while actual bridge construction is expected to begin in March. Motorists should allow extra travel time as lane restrictions will be in place and flaggers will occasionally need to alternate traffic through the work zone.

Avenue B, 1st Street - W. Main Canal

This project is located in Yuma County within the City of Yuma, extending from Avenue B to 1st Street along the north bank of the West Main Canal. The work consists of constructing as asphaltic concrete pathway. Additional work includes installing pedestrian lighting, constructing rest stops, and other miscellaneous work.

Maiden Lane, 1st-2nd streets

A 60-day project along Maiden Lane will require the roadway to be closed to traffic from 1st Street to Second Street, between 7 a.m. and  5 p.m. Monday through Friday. Signs will be posted near the area of Maiden Lane and along nearby roadways to notify drivers of detours in the area.
