The City of Yuma will hold primary and general elections in 2017, and those seeking office now have access to the forms and information they'll need in order to run for any of the five seats that will be open.
The City's primary election will be held Aug. 29 for the purpose of nominating and/or electing candidates for mayor, three seats on the City Council and one seat for presiding municipal judge. The general election will be held Nov. 7 for the purpose of electing candidates in the event that seats remain following results of the primary election.
Candidates may be elected to office in the primary if they receive 50 percent plus one vote among ballots cast.
Those elected to these positions would each serve a four-year term beginning Jan. 1, 2018.
Candidate nomination packets are available from the office of the City Clerk, located on the first floor of Yuma City Hall, One City Plaza (3rd Street between 1st Avenue and Madison Avenue).
The candidate manual includes information regarding qualifications for office, the number of valid signatures required, financial disclosure statements and political action committees.
City of Yuma elections are nonpartisan; no affiliations to political parties are disclosed. Council candidates are not bound to specific geographic areas; seats are held at large.
The first day for candidates to file nomination papers and other nomination forms is May 1, and the deadline to file nomination paperwork at the City Clerk’s office is 5 p.m. May 31.
