The City of Yuma will welcome the captain of its new namesake Navy ship this weekend, and you are invited.
WHAT: Meet-and-greet for Capt. David Gommo and accompanying officers of the USNS Yuma.
WHEN: 2:30 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 17
WHERE: Lobby and/or atrium of City Hall, One City Plaza (3rd Street between 1st and Madison avenues).
WHO: Yuma Mayor Douglas Nicholls, members of the Yuma City Council, City Administrator Greg Wilkinson, USNS Yuma Capt. Gommo and accompanying officers.
The 338-foot ship was christened in August by former Arizona Gov. Janet Napolitano, the ship’s sponsor. The eighth of ten expeditionary fast transport ships to be built in a block contract with the Navy, the Yuma will be used for high-speed transport, primarily for troops and equipment.
