New signal crossing on 8th Street

A weekly list of City projects or encroachment permits authorized by the City of Yuma affecting busy streets.

City Projects

8th Street, 21st Avenue - New Pedestrian Walkway and Crosswalk

The pedestrian walkway at 8th Street and 21st Avenue is officially open. A High-Intensity Activated Crosswalk (HAWK) beacon is now located at that intersection, which is a signal used to stop road traffic and allow pedestrians to cross safely. The HAWK may be activated by a pedestrian or bicyclist, and will begin flashing a yellow light to warn motorists to slow down. A red light means motorists must stop and yield to pedestrians in the crosswalk, according to Arizona state law. Drivers cannot pass a vehicle stopped at a crosswalk.

“Proper driving at a HAWK means to slow down when it starts flashing, and stop when it goes solid red,” said City Engineer Jeff Kramer. “Then, when it starts flashing red again, you can go through It after you stop fully if the crosswalk is clear, just like you would at a stop sign.”

The City and the Yuma Metropolitan Planning Organization secured grant funding for this project, which was administered by the Arizona Department of Transportation.

4th Avenue, 32nd Street to 40th Street

The City Council recently approved a contract for improvements to 4th Avenue between 32nd Street and 40th Street. Work is expected to begin this month. This project will reconstruct the roadway pavement section to meet current city standards, and will address other related needs including updating streetlights, addition of a continuous center two-way left turn lane, installation of a sewer manhole, and pedestrian safety enhancements (multiuse pathway improvements and new crosswalks).
