City, Mexican Consulate to host Fiestas Patrias on Sept. 12
Yuma, Ariz. - The City of Yuma and the Consulate of Mexico in Yuma will host a Fiestas Patrias celebration on Saturday, Sept.12, at Desert Sun Stadium. The free event invites all in the region to commemorate Mexico's declaration of independence from Spain and celebrate the Hispanic heritage, history and culture in the area.
Gates open to the public at 5 p.m. The festival will kick off with live music, dance and entertainment, and will include the presentation of 'El Grito,' by the Consul of Mexico.
The unique sounds of the live performances aim to bring the heart and culture of Mexico and Arizona to life on the stage at Desert Sun Stadium, and will include a rondalla performance, a mariachi band and a folkloric dance group.
Local vendors will prepare food for attendees to purchase as they enjoy the evening. Craft vendors will be on site for browsing and shopping pleasure. Additionally, area nonprofit agencies with an emphasis on serving the Hispanic community will be at the Fiestas Patrias to provide informational and educational resources. Kids can play on water slides, and enjoy games and contests for children.
The event is free to attend, with food and drinks available for purchase.
The event will be held on Saturday, Sept. 12, rather than on Mexico's Independence Day - Tuesday, Sept. 16- so the celebration can occur on a weekend.
