With record rainfall already having hit Yuma this week and more expected throughout Thursday, the City will offer sandbags for area residents to pick up.
Bags will be available at the parking lot outside the Yuma Civic Center, 36th Street and Avenue A, by noon today and remain until supplies last or until the flooding threat subsides, currently estimated around 10 p.m.
Residents may use the provided shovels to fill bags with sand, which they can then take back and place around areas of their home where water may be approaching the structure.
Some city staff will be on hand to assist elderly or disabled residents. Residents may not take empty bags.
The City’s Public Works, Utilities and Parks crews will maximize operations today to ensure services remain functional and as many roadways are cleared as possible.
Flash flooding is expected on certain roadways that have been prone in the past. Crews will post “Road Flooded” signs as warranted, and motorists should prepare to avoid posted roadways. Due to the nature of flash flooding, signs may remain at some locations after flooding has passed.
Residents wishing to report flood-related or road-related issues should do so directly to Public Works at 928-373-4504 or 928-373-4502.
