Mark Martinez is a fifth-generation Yuman and a true son of Yuma, raised in the Lanes (Donavan Estates)—a community that shaped his unwavering commitment to service. Mark served two combat tours (Desert Storm and Operation Iraqi Freedom), where he learned the true meaning of sacrifice, brotherhood, and leadership under fire. Mark retired as a Sergeant First Class from the United States Army Reserves and was awarded the Bronze Star for his distinguished service in Iraq. Simultaneously, Mark served his hometown as a Sheriff’s Deputy. Mark retired as a Captain from the Yuma County Sheriff’s Office and now dedicates himself to serving as one of your Yuma City Councilman, fighting for the community that raised him.
Mark’s commitment and selfless public service is not confined to his role on the council. His service continues off the battlefield and beyond the badge.
He currently also plays a role in the following:
- Vice Chair of the Military Affairs Council (MAC)
- Active Member of the Salvation Army Advisory Board
- Active Member of the Pee Posh Veterans Organization
- Compassus Hospice of Yuma Veteran’s Volunteer
- Active Member of the Fraternal Order of Police (FOP) Lodge 24
- Active Member of the Yuma County Victims Rights Committee

Mark remains a relentless advocate for veterans, law enforcement, first responders and Yuma’s hardworking families.
In his role as City Councilman, Mark applies the same discipline and critical thinking he honed in the military and law enforcement to budgeting and financial oversight, ensuring the city’s resources are managed responsibly and effectively. His leadership is guided by a strategic vision focused on sustainability, transparency, and improving quality of life for all residents.
Above all, Mark stands firm in his core values: God, Family, and Country.
Mark is truly blessed to share his life with Esther, a supportive wife and a dedicated Crime Victim Advocate with the Yuma County Attorney’s Office. With decades of experience, she stands on the front lines playing a crucial role in advocating for the rights of crime victims in court and throughout the justice process. Their shared dedication to public service and justice is the foundation of their marriage. Together, Mark and Esther lead lives rooted in their shared commitment to community, faith, and service—each in their own way, but always united in purpose.
In addition, Mark is a proud father to Mark John, Janella, and Johnathan, a grandfather to four beautiful grandchildren and is a grateful son of John and Irene Martinez. He credits his family and roots for the strength to keep pushing forward— through every challenge, in every chapter of service.
Rooted in faith and family, Mark lives by a simple, powerful truth: “Warriors aren’t trained to retire—they just change battlefields.” And he continues to serve—every day—for the community that made him who he is.
