Par 3 golf course to temporarily close for irrigation upgrades

New system will improve playing conditions, efficiency and sustainability

Post Date:03/27/2025 4:41 PM

Desert Hills Golf Course is getting set for exciting upgrades to its irrigation system. A series of installations begin at the par 3 course (1301 W. 32nd Street) Saturday, March 29, when the par 3 will close temporarily. The main 18-hole course will remain open for play during this phase, prior to receiving its own upgrades this summer.

The irrigation system upgrades will refine course conditions, improve operational efficiency, increase water conservation and boost sustainability. Players will notice better turf with consistent, high-quality greens.

“This project is made possible through a grant received from the Water Finance Infrastructure Finance Authority of Arizona (WIFA),” said Director of Parks and Recreation Eric Urfer. “The intent of the grant is to assist cities with water conservation efforts. This is being accomplished at the golf course by installing 100-year irrigation pipe and smart irrigation heads and controllers. The smart technology will improve the precision with which the course is watered, boosting water conservation. The new piping will enhance sustainability through its durability, as it is designed to last 100 years or more. In addition, turf in specific areas around the course will be removed and replaced with native landscaping, making the course a little more challenging.”

With work on the par 3 beginning Saturday, the City encourages players to enjoy the main Desert Hills course. Upgrades to the main course are scheduled to take place between June and September, during which time work will take place nine holes at a time, with nine holes remaining open for play.
