Governor Katie Hobbs has appointed Mayor Douglas Nicholls to the Arizona Space Commission. With a background in civil engineering and a strong focus on economic growth and infrastructure, Mayor Nicholls brings valuable expertise to the Commission’s efforts to advance Arizona’s space industry.

The Arizona Space Commission, which had been inactive for the past decade, was revived following the passage of HB2254, spearheading efforts to position Arizona as a leader in the space economy. The Commission will work to identify strategic aerospace projects, expand industry partnerships, and implement aerospace-related educational opportunities across the state.

“I’m honored to have been selected by Governor Hobbs to serve on this Commission and will work diligently to see how we can bring new opportunities in the burgeoning space industry to our great state of Arizona and Yuma,” said Mayor Nicholls. “I see extremely high potential for increased opportunities, quality of life and higher education. We need to look to the future to be involved in the industries of the future.”

A dedicated advocate for regional economic development, Mayor Nicholls has been a strong proponent of public-private partnerships to foster innovation and job growth. He founded 4FrontED, a binational initiative promoting cross-border collaboration, and has contributed his expertise to numerous state committees and boards. Additionally, Mayor Nicholls has been a vocal supporter of Yuma’s efforts to establish a spaceport, recognizing its potential to attract aerospace and technology industries, create high-quality jobs, and position the region as a hub for advanced innovation.

Mayor Nicholls’ appointment to the Arizona Space Commission strengthens Yuma’s role in statewide aerospace initiatives, attracting investment and fostering job growth in the space industry. His leadership and dedication to economic development position Yuma as a key player in Arizona’s expanding space sector.
