The US Airways Center was packed for the Arizona Basketball Bonanza State Competition on Saturday April 5, 2008 and four of our local youth walked away with first and second place trophies. During the competition, Yuma was represented by 13 boys and girls. They competed against 202 others, ages 9-14, for the State title in the Hot Shot, Three Point, and Free Throw Competition.
The City of Yuma Parks and Recreation Department, along with twenty other organizations around the state held their local Basketball Bonanza competitions in March. First Place winners were then invited to compete in the Basketball Bonanza State Competition in Phoenix at the US Airways Center where the Phoenix Suns play.
The event lived up to its name as the Hot Shot and Three Point contests were held on the main court and the Free Throw contest on the practice court. The skilled players were cheered on by many family and friends. First and second place winners walked away with trophies and the great experience of competing on the Phoenix Suns court.
Yuma's own, Hans Fitshen placed First in the Hot Shot Contest for boys, age 11-12, Baylee Witzberger placed First in the Hot Shot Contest for girls, age 11-12, Alex Witzberger placed First in the Free Throw Contest for girls, age 13-14 and Steven Mitchell placed Second in the Hot Shot Contest for boys, age 13-14.
The following Yuma youth placed First in our local competition, and also competed at the State Competition, but did not place: Alejandra Juarez, Isaac Argello, Ashley Doering, T.J. Smith, Fernando Ramirez, Krystina Mendoza, Phillip Griego, Isaac Daniel, and Hayden Harmon and even though they didn't walk away with a trophy, they all a great time.
This was a great opportunity for all participants. All were winners and had the chance to play at the US Airways Center just like their favorite NBA players. The kids left the arena with a sense of accomplishment and hopes of being back on the court in the future.
