On Wednesday August 25, 2010 between approximately 9:00 am and 12:30 pm Yuma Fire Department personnel responded to four (4) motor vehicle fires. At 9:03 am a van on fire was reported at 16th St. and 14th Ave. A 1999 Chevrolet passenger van had lost its brakes and the driver stopped it by putting the van into parking gear. He then found a fire under the hood, believed to be in leaking brake fluid. The driver used a fire extinguisher to put out the fire. YFD personnel arrived to ensure the fire was extinguished.

At 10:03 am a fire in a semi-truck trailer was reported in the 1100 block of Redondo Center Dr. A fire had started in the trailer’s lift gate motor while at the loading dock at Home Depot. The driver drove the truck and trailer away from the dock and unhooked the trailer before using a fire extinguisher to fight the fire. YFD personnel again arrived to ensure the fire was out and had not spread.

At 12:10 pm a vehicle involved in a traffic crash on 24th St. and Mary Ave. was reported to be on fire. Firefighters arrived to find smoke and flames at the rear of the vehicle and extinguished the fire. The fire was believed to have started in wiring damaged by the rear end crash.

At 12:32 pm a fourth vehicle fire was reported near 32nd St. and Ave. 3 E. Firefighters did not find a fire at that location but checked the area and found a fire at Allied Waste, 3040 Avenue 3-1/2 E. A garbage truck driver had been stopped at the Barney’s Gas station East of Ave. 3 E. He noticed smoke coming from the truck and drove it the Allied Waste yard, dumping the load in an open area. YFD personnel, along with MCAS Fire Department personnel, extinguished the approximately two (2) tons of debris.

This number of vehicle fires in this short of a time is unusual. Although the high temperatures being experienced may not have been directly responsible, it does put extra stress on equipment. Please keep in mind your vehicle maintenance.
