On Tuesday August 24, 2010, just before 8:30 am, a fire was reported at the City of Yuma's Water Treatment Plant, 175 North Main Street. Arriving Yuma Fire Department personnel were directed to the Mechanic's Shop on the facility. It was found that a shop rag had been ignited by a grinder, starting a small fire. Water Treatment Plant employees acted quickly and knocked down the flames with a fire extinguisher.
Firefighters ensured the fire was out, and vented the remaining smoke from the building. There were no injuries and very limited damage to a nearby machine tool. There was no damage to any equipment used in the water treatment process and no disruption of service.
Employees knowing the location and operation of fire extinguishers, as was the case today, can stop a fire while it is still small. The Yuma Fire Department encourages businesses to provide orientations to their employees on when and how to use fire extinguishers, and will assist in providing that training.
