New School Zones and School Zone Times
Motorists should be advised that all area public schools will be open for the school year as of Monday, Aug. 16. Two new 15-mph school zones have been added to city streets this year:
- 3rd Street and Magnolia Avenue
- Avenue A and 21st Street
Additionally, changes have been implemented on East 24th Street between Avenue 7E and Avenue 9E. Motorists should be advised that digital speed limit signs there have been replaced with more traditional speed limit signs indicating the presence of a school zone and that a school zone speed limit of 25 mph will be in effect when the signal above it is flashing. The stretch of 24th Street between Desert Mesa and Otondo schools will be treated as one school zone, rather than two separate school zones. As Monday is District 1's new "early out" day this year, the school zone speed limit will be in effect from 1:45 p.m. to 2:20 p.m. on Mondays. Other weekdays, the school zone assemblies will be active from 7:45 to 8:35 a.m. and 3:15 to 3:50 p.m.
Remember, the 15-mph zone begins at the point where the school zone/speed limit sign facing your direction of travel is placed, and ends once your vehicle has completely passed through the marked crosswalk (not where the speed limit sign faces oncoming traffic). Speed limits in school zones are strictly enforced - Yuma Police Department's Project Drive Safe patrols have been focusing on school zones this week.
Avenue 3E and 24th Street
Avenue 3E remains closed between 24th Street and 32nd Street for widening and resurfacing. 24th Street is restricted to one lane of traffic in each direction from Avenue 2½E to Avenue 3E. Businesses in the general vicinity are open and access is available; please plan ahead to reach your destination.
Beginning Monday, Aug. 23, milling and pavement work is likely to begin on the northern half of 24th Street west of the Weyerhaeuser rail crossing.
16th Street and Avenue B - Qwest
Through Friday, Aug. 20, Qwest will be working in the intersection of 16th Street and Avenue B. Westbound 16th Street and southbound Avenue B are expected to experience lane restrictions during work hours.
32nd Street Bridge Over East Main Canal
Westbound 32nd Street is down to one lane of traffic between the Dunes subdivision and 21st Drive as crews relocate a Qwest junction box at the bridge over the East Main Canal. Work is expected to be complete within the next two weeks.
Street Maintenance, Week of Aug. 23
For the week of Aug. 23-27, the City's asphalt maintenance crews will be operating in the following areas:
- Avenue A from 24th Street to 32nd Street
- Victoria Meadows (grinding, crack seal)
- Redondo Center Drive from Giss Parkway to I-8
- Carver Park area from 3rd Street to 8th Street
- Bardeaux Oaks (Grinding, patching, and crack sealing)
- Fire station # 4 area, 16th Street west of Avenue B
- Motorists should expect lane restrictions and lane closure could occur in these areas.
Avenue 6E Sewer Interceptor at 32nd Street
The intersection of 32nd Street at Avenue 6E has been closed as part of a sewer line interceptor project. During this portion of the project, 32nd Street traffic will be reduced to one lane in each direction in that section. Avenue 6E turns to and from 32nd Street will be limited to "right in, right out," meaning no left turns.
40th Street Water Transmission Line, Avenue 3E to 6E
40th Street remains closed between Avenue 3-1/2E and Avenue 4E as the water transmission line project progresses; however, 4E is open to through traffic at this intersection.
16th Street Widening - ADOT Project
Traffic along 16th Street remains restricted to one lane in each direction between Yuma Palms Parkway and Arizona Avenue as work proceeds on both bridges and in medians. Please plan ahead to reach your 16th Street destination.
Avenue B to Avenue C, 1st Street to 8th Street Sewer Project - Yuma County
Work is under way on sewer lines in a general area between 1st and 8th streets and avenues B to C. Occasional closures and lane restrictions will take place at varying times during the course of this project. Avenue C has been closed at 5th Street.
I-8 Rock Fall Containment at Telegraph Pass - ADOT Project
ADOT's rock fall containment project has traffic restricted to one lane in each direction on I-8 between just east of Foothills Boulevard and Dome Valley. Wide loads are restricted to 12 feet, with the only available detour at this time being SR 85 to I-10 to U.S. 95.
