City Administrator Greg Wilkinson handed an Employee of the Quarter award to Arnold Montijo, building maintenance specialist, at Yuma City Hall on Wednesday, July 28.

City of Yuma employees assembled in Council Chambers for the award's inaugural announcement. The award was created in part to foster recognition for jobs well done following a period where City employees have endured furloughs and a lack of merit pay raises, Wilkinson said.

Montijo works in the Facilities Maintenance division of the City Administration department. As one of the "invisible elves" who do everything from modifying cubicles to decorating for holidays, Montijo is often seen working in early mornings or after-hours evenings, Wilkinson noted, yet does so with an earnest smile on his face.  Among the projects Montijo has been working on recently has been replacing the lamps at City facilities with energy-saving lamp units paid for through federal stimulus grant funds.

Wilkinson chose Montijo from a field that began with open nominations from among City staff members, then was narrowed down by the purchasing representatives from various City departments.

Other nominees for the award included Dalila Alcala, Rita Ammons, Cesar Cordova, Joe Cox, Connie Edwards, Arthur Everett, Hector Gaxiola, Jerrell Hamby, Tom Hofacker, John Lekan, Rita Perez, Mary Roman, Kris Ruiz Leon, Fernando Salazar, Charlie Smith and Ken Vandersloot.
