Yuma Police Chief Jerry Geier is pleased to announce the creation and implementation of the Yuma Police Department’s first ever Patrol-based K-9 Unit. YPD currently has one narcotics-based K-9 Unit. However, the two new K-9's are trained in areas such as; building/area searches, tracking, and apprehension of serious offenders in flight, in addition to being crossed-trained in narcotics detection.
Chief Jerry Geier said, "Patrol K-9 Units are rare in the Yuma area and this was a part of our police force I wanted to create as part of my vision to become one of the premier law enforcement agencies in Arizona. The Patrol K-9 Units provide additional resources to our officers. This reduces the risk our officers might encounter in a number of circumstances where the K-9 Units were not present."
The two new additions to our force are; Officer Grumphy and Officer Troy. They are both Belgium Malinois that have over 500 hours of training and multiple certifications. They were purchased from Adlerhorst International Incorporated for approximately $9,600 per dog. The K-9's were purchased through funding by Yuma County RICO (Racketeer Influenced Corrupt Organizations) funds. RICO funds are generated by law enforcement activities that result in asset forfeiture proceedings. Once forfeited, proceeds are deposited into the County RICO fund and are expended in accordance with state and federal laws and guidelines.
On Wednesday, August 4th at 9:00 at the Yuma Police Department, we will have our new K-9 Units on display for the local media. Chief Geier and the K-9 Officers will be available for interviews and we will have live demonstrations by the K-9’s.
