On July 27, 2010 at 2:05 pm a vehicle on fire in a garage was reported at 2710 West 28th Place. First arriving Yuma Fire Department personnel found heavy smoke and fire coming from the garage. Two passenger cars were fully on fire as well as the attached garage and grass surrounding the front of the house.
Firefighters quickly knocked down the flames and extinguished the fire. Both cars were completely destroyed, with heavy damage to the garage. The interior of the home also sustained serious heat and smoke damage.
Two grandparents, a father, and his eleven year old son were home at the time of the fire. The family was alerted to the fire by the home's smoke alarms. The grandmother and child safely evacuated the house. The adult males attempted to remove a vehicle and other property from the garage, but were unable to do so. Both were treated at the scene for exposure to the smoke and transported to Yuma Regional Medical Center.
Thanks to the home's smoke alarms, all four occupants had the chance to get out safely. However, once you get out of a burning structure, never go back in. It is unfortunately a reoccurring story in fires, where people safely escape, only to be injured returning for belongings.
The origin and cause of the fire are under investigation.
