Update For July 1 Starts With New Tennis Courts; Summer Six Pac 'Same Time Next Year'; Spike Night

Different Event Highlighted Each Day During National Parks And Recreation Month; Student Banners Mark Occasion

Yuma Parks and Recreation will celebrate National Park and Recreation Month by offering 31 days of exciting events and programs for people of all ages and capabilities. A special Parks and Recreation Month event calendar is full of activities and event ideas; pick up a copy in the City Hall lobby. While at City Hall, visitors will want to view the distinctive banners created especially for Parks and Recreation Month by Cibola High School students.

"The role of Parks and Recreation in our community is that of an essential public service that provides and maintains open space with shade and clean air, opportunities for youth to learn and grow, the promotion of healthy lifestyles as well as clean, secure public spaces for gatherings and celebrations," noted Director of Parks and Recreation Becky Chavez. "We invite all of our friends, families, and neighbors to take part in all that we have to offer."

Desert Sun Tennis Courts Better Than Ever, Ready For Play

Following Thursday's ribbon cutting, tennis returned to Desert Sun Tennis Courts, adjacent to Desert Sun Stadium, Avenue A and Desert Sun Drive and Friendship Park, 34th Place west of Avenue A. Featuring crack-resistant post-tension concrete, eye-friendly court colors and water-saving desert landscaping thanks to the generosity of Pecan Grove Garden Club, the eight refurbished courts and remaining exhibition court are available for play from dawn to 11 p.m. (the lights help with nighttime play). Got a group coming in and want to reserve some courts? Call or stop by Parks and Recreation, 373-5243 or One City Plaza.

It's 'Same Time Next Year' At Theatre's Summer Six Pac

Six-plus weeks of great local theater continue at the Historic Yuma Theatre, 254 S. Main St., when Yuma Community Theater presents the opening weekend of "Same Time, Next Year" - July 8-10 and July 15-17, with shows starting at 7 p.m. Thursday, Friday and Saturday. Follow the annual meetings and passage of times between a man and a woman - both married to other people - who see each other at the same location over the course of 24 years. Tickets for reserved seats are $9 each per adult; 13 and under get in for $6 each.

Next in the series:

"Moon Over Buffalo" - July 22-24 and July 29-31, presented by 5 Point Theater Company

Also, Infinite Imagination Youth Theater present "Anne of Green Gables" Aug. 6-7 - this isn't part of the 3-play package, but tickets for this show are just $5 each!

'Spike Night' - The Volleyball Variety

Volleyball enthusiasts unite! The July 10 Spike Night Sand Volleyball Tournament at Kennedy Sand Volleyball Courts, Kennedy Lane north of 24th Street, is fast approaching. Why wait until the last minute and pay an extra $10 by registering the day of the event? Instead, take advantage of the early-bird discount rate of $30 by signing your team up today. All teams are asked to arrive by 7 p.m. and plan on being at the courts until midnight. Call 373-5243 to register.

Little Shakers (This Decade's Version of 'Musical Youth'?)

Does your tot march to the beat of his or her own drum? Sign 'em up for a class that will introduce them to all types of sounds and instruments. From July 6- 8, tots ages 3-5 will be introduced to the world of music and will even get to decorate an instrument of their own. This is all going on at the Clymer Recreation Center from 10:45 a.m. to noon. Sign your little one up by calling 373-5243 or registering online at www.yumaaz.gov/parksandrec.

Chef's Delight For Your Little Kitchen Helper

Any parent can tell you that their child just loves to help in the kitchen. Well, this class will teach your child the basic skills they need to know how to whip up a snack or meal in a jiff! Chef's Delight, open to ages 6-12, will take place at the Clymer Recreation Center from 1 to 4:45 p.m. July 6-8. Call 373-5243 to sign up or register online at www.yumaaz.gov/parksandrec.

Imagination Exploration

Are you the parent of a special needs child searching for a creative outlet for your little one? Imagination Playground is a breakthrough play-space concept that encourages self-directed "free play". Giant foam blocks, mats, wagons, fabric, and more overflow with creative potential! This adaptive recreation activity (geared towards children with physical and/or developmental disabilities) is open to ages 3 to 12. This exploration will take place at Clymer Recreation Center from 9:30 am to 11:30 am on July 9. Advance registration is a must; call 373-5243 for fee information and to register.

Tiny Tumblers Twist and Twirl

Tiny Tumblers, Yuma's very own gymnastics class for the little ones, is for potty-trained 3-to-5 year-olds and session two, June 28 through July 8, still has a few spots available. The classes run Monday through Friday and you have two times to choose from: Noon to 1:30 p.m. or 1:30 to 3 p.m.

Take Pride in Yuma

There were 57 cases of graffiti abated the week of June 23-29; this compares with 37 the prior week. Help us stamp out graffiti by reporting any and all graffiti you notice in the City limits to the Graffiti Hotline, (928) 329-2828. Storing this number on your mobile phone makes remembering specific locations easy!
