The Yuma Police Department, in an effort to provide for a safer community, will be conducting an impaired driving checkpoint on Saint Patrick’s Day, March 17th, 2010.
The Impaired Driving Checkpoint will be a first in Yuma Police Department history. It will consist of a designated street with officers stopping all vehicles for brief contact with each driver to detect any signs of impairment.
Chief Jerry Geier said, “I support the Yuma Police Department’s first impaired driving checkpoint because I have seen firsthand how effective they are in prevention and public education.”
This detail will be funded through a grant from the Arizona Governors Office of Highway Safety for impaired driving enforcement and education.
The Yuma Police encourage motorists to do their part by making safe transportation arrangements prior to consuming intoxicating beverages and reporting suspected impaired drivers. Remember the 1st time offense for a DUI is one day in jail and a $1,480 fine.
