Registration For 2011 Games Begins Dec. 1
Yuma, Arizona - It won't match the hype, accomplishment or fervor experienced the past couple weeks in Vancouver, but for those enjoying a little competition in Yuma this winter, it was a record-setting year.
With 849 competitors in the 2010 City of Yuma Parks and Recreation Department Senior Games, last year's participant record of 820 fell by the wayside. Over 50 competitions were held at venues throughout Yuma. A cumulative total of 971 gold, silver and bronze medals were awarded to athletes ranging in age from 52 to 97.
"I have many rewards in my job throughout the year but Senior Games is one of the biggest," said Joe Cox, Recreation Program Supervisor and Senior Games Coordinator. "Not only is there great competitive spirit during the games but there is also a tremendous sense of good sportsmanship woven into the games. Plus, I have the opportunity to meet great folks from all over the U.S. and Canada."
Closing Ceremonies for the 2010 Games were held on Feb. 25 and already plans are in the works for the 2011 games. Registration for the 2011 Yuma Senior Games will be available on Dec. 1 of this year.
