Gospel Music Extravaganza 2010
The glorious sound of gospel music will be heard at the Historic Yuma Theatre on Sunday, Feb. 28 during Gospel Extravaganza 2010 presented by Cultural Council of Yuma. Held annually to celebrate Black History Month, the event will feature the local talent of the First Presbyterian Church Choir, Yuma Youth Choir, New Direction Ministries Inspirational Choir, Gewline Johnson and Cindy Nunn. There will also be dancers and an African art exhibit by Rosemary Hawkey. The show starts at 4 p.m. and the doors will open at 3:30 p.m. Tickets are $5 general admission and may be purchased in advance at the Yuma Art Center or at the door. Fortuna Wash Family Hike
This hike is perfect for the whole family. Come and join our guides as we trek through Fortuna Wash on Saturday, March 6. Transportation will be provided to the hiking spot from the Yuma Readiness and Community Center, 24th Street and Araby Road, and participants should meet there by 8 a.m. Wear comfortable clothes and shoes and bring sunscreen. Return transportation will be provided to the Readiness Center. The fee is just $5. Call 373-5243 to register.
Versatile Entertainers ‘The Duttons’ Return
After their sellout show last year, the Duttons return to the Historic Yuma Theatre’s stage with two shows – 3 p.m. and 7 p.m. Saturday, March 6. The Duttons are known as Branson’s most versatile music group. Each Dutton plays at least six different instruments during the show. They are accomplished singers and dancers. They will tickle your funny bone with heartwarming comedy. Their shows are self-produced by the family including the choreography, musical arrangement, and production resulting in what audiences describe as the entertainment experience of a lifetime. Tickets are $18 for reserved seating. Tickets may be purchased at the Yuma Art Center, 254 S Main St., Yuma Civic Center, 1440 W. ‘Family Hang Time’ March 19
At the Yuma Readiness and Community Center on March 19, Family Hang Time features games like washoes, dodge ball, and even a climbing wall. Each family will receive a large one topping pizza too. The cost is just $11 per family. The fun starts at 6 p.m. and all ages are welcome. Please register in advance; call 373-5243.
Play Disc Golf
Have some fun with Frisbee-like discs by playing a round of disc golf on our new 9-hole course at the West Wetlands Park. This game, great for all ages, can be played at almost no cost to you. Call the Parks & Recreation Office at 373-5243 to rent the discs for only $5 and a $20 refundable deposit when the discs are returned.
Senior Billiards
Don't forget that senior pool shooting is going down at the North End Community Center, 160 E. 1st St. Come on down and show off your skills Monday through Friday between 9 a.m. and 4 p.m. The drop-in fee is $1.50 ($1.00 for City residents). Monthly passes are still available. Call 373-5245 for more information.
Life In Pink Annual Fashion Show
Regional Center for Border Health, Inc. and Yuma County Breast & Cervical Cancer Coalition will present the Life in Pink Annual Fashion Show at the Historic Yuma Theatre at 2 p.m. Sunday, March 7. The show is sponsored by Dillard’s, who will supply the fashions. Tickets are $10 each and available at Regional Center for Border Health, Dillard’s Credit Desk, and the Yuma Art Center. Proceeds benefit Yuma County Breast & Cervical Cancer Coalition.
Silversmithing At North End Community Center
The fifth session of Silversmithing – for seniors interested in jewelry design and construction – starts March 19 at the North End Community Center, across from Main Street Cinemas. Classes are held on Fridays from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. The drop in fee is $11. Any questions can be answered by calling 373-5245.
YBBL And Babe Ruth Registration
The Parks & Recreation Office is taking registration for Yuma Boys Baseball League (YBBL) and Yuma Babe Ruth through February. The cost for YBBL is $55 and open to boys 6 to 12 years old. The cost for Babe Ruth is $80 and open to boys ages 13 to 19 years old. An original birth certificate is required for new players.
Yuma Youth Fast Pitch And T-Ball
The Yuma Youth Fast Pitch and T-Ball League is taking registration for their spring league. YYFTL is open to boys and girls ages 4 to 6, and girls ages 7 to 14. The registration takes place at the Parks & Recreation Office at City Hall. Registration ends on March 4 with games to be played April through June.
Spring Softball Registration
Calling all softball fanatics! Registration for the spring men's and women's leagues is now open. The games are scheduled to begin March 15 and continue through June 4. The cost is $325 per team, plus $23 annual A.S.A. sanctioning fee. Registration will remain open until March 4 or until leagues fill.
Winter Performance Season At Historic Yuma Theatre
The shows listed below start at 7 p.m. with doors opening at 6:15 p.m. Tickets are $19.50 per show. All seats are reserved. Tickets may be purchased at the Yuma Art Center, 254 S. Take Pride In Yuma
There were 101 cases of graffiti abated the week of Feb. 17-23, compared to 115 the previous week.
The next Take Pride in Yuma paint-out will take place March 27. Recruit a few friends for a few fast hours of fun beautifying a former problem area for graffiti; reserve your spot by calling (928) 373-5228.
Graffiti cleanup and vandalism currently costs the Yuma taxpayers over $200,000 per year. Please help us reduce vandalism by reporting incidences of crime to 78-Crime (782-7463) and graffiti to the Graffiti Busters hot line, 329-2828. If you witness a crime in progress, call 911.
