Information For This Reporting Period and Year to Date (As of February 25, 2010)

Yuma, Arizona - Employees of the City of Yuma Police Department, Fire Department and Parks & Recreation Department responded to the following calls for service and reports of vandalism and graffiti this week.

Yuma Fire Department

For the week of February 14th through February 20th, Yuma Fire Department responded to 244 Emergency Calls for Service, which included:

  • 5 Commercial Assignments including an artificial smoke generator that set off a smoke detector, and various alarms
  • 25 Motor Vehicle Crashes - 1 involving a pedestrian, 2 involving bicycles, 1 involving a forklift, 1 rollover, 1 involving a wall, and 2 involving 3 vehicles
  • 189 Other Medical Emergencies (serious to minor) - 6 for difficulty breathing, 10 for chest pain, 29 fall victims, 9 unconscious people, 6 seizure cases, 5 diabetic emergencies, 19 subjects with mental problems, 5 stroke cases, a call for an infant locked inside a vehicle, and miscellaneous other illnesses and injuries
  • 25 Special Duty, Public Assistance, and Residential Assignments that included: a commercial dumpster fire, 3 calls for yard debris illegally burning behind a residence, burned popcorn at a hotel, a call for the smell of natural gas coming from a residence, grease build up on a heating element on a heater that started smoking, a call for a power line down in an alleyway, burned toast at a commercial building, a large water leak in a commercial building, and various alarms

So far 2010 has been busy for the Yuma Fire Department with more than 1770 emergency calls for service. Many of these were Emergency Medical Service (EMS) calls, but there were also a large number of fire related calls. Many of the EMS calls were for accidents that may have been preventable. Many of the fire related calls were for people having unauthorized fires on their property. Some of these were "party" bonfires and some were for people burning trash or yard debris. Neither of these are allowed without permits.

A bonfire with friends may be just the thing on a cold night out in the desert (in an allowed area, safely maintained and monitored) but it can be a nuisance and a hazard in residential neighborhoods. Fires too close to combustibles and property lines pose the risk of serious fire spread, especially under windy conditions. Un-permitted fires are unlawful and also result in many unnecessary Fire Department responses.

So, use a grill, use a fireplace, and keep cooking/heating fires small and attended (and fully extinguished after use). Also, be aware of weather conditions, such as the wind speed and direction. For information regarding permits for fires on your property in the City of Yuma, contact the Yuma Fire Department at 373-4850.

For more information, contact the Yuma Fire Department Public Information Office at 373-4855.

The 2010 Census Is Coming...

Did you know that each person living in Yuma who is not counted in the 2010 Census means a loss of $400 per person in state and federal funds for community services such as roads, schools, job training centers, etc.?

Accurate data reflecting changes in our community are crucial in apportioning seats in the U.S. House of Representatives and deciding how more than $400 billion per year is allocated for projects like new hospitals and community centers. That's more than $4 trillion over a 10-year period.

Stay tuned for more Census 2010 information.
