The Yuma Police Department is now accepting applications for its upcoming Citizens Police Academy. The academy is designed to educate the citizens of Yuma about the daily operations of the Yuma Police Department. The academy, which is eight (8) weeks long, will give participants an opportunity to meet several officers who will be instructing various topics relating to police work. The academy will start on Tuesday, March 16, 2010, with a graduation ceremony on Tuesday, May 4, 2010. Classes are held every Tuesday from 6:00 pm to 9:00 pm.
There is no fee for attending the academy but you will be required to attend at least five sessions and participate in all "hands on" exercises for successful completion of the course. Preference will be given to residents of the City of Yuma. Applicants must 21 years of age or older.
Chief Jerry Geier said, "I personally encourage anyone who's ever wanted to become better informed about our police department to attend. Our goal is to provide the community with a greater understanding of the law enforcement and customer service aspects we provide."
Applications for the academy can be picked up at the Yuma Police Department, 1500 S. 1st Avenue.
If you have any questions about the program please feel free to contact Officer Kevin Bynum at 373-4733. The deadline for application submission is Wednesday, March 10, 2010.
