Take Pride In Yuma - Slide Closed At Carver Park

There were 115 cases of graffiti abated the week of Feb. 10-16, an increase of almost 40 cases over the previous week.

The slide at Carver Park incurred significant damage recently. As a result, and because of the current City financial situation, there are currently no plans to replace this slide; instead, it has been closed for safety.

Graffiti cleanup and vandalism currently costs the Yuma taxpayers over $200,000 per year.  Please help us reduce vandalism by reporting incidences of crime to 78-Crime (782-7463) and graffiti to the Graffiti Busters hot line, 329-2828.  If you witness a crime in progress, call 911.

Gospel Music Extravaganza 2010

The glorious sound of gospel music will be heard at the Historic Yuma Theatre on Sunday, Feb. 28 during Gospel Extravaganza 2010 presented by Cultural Council of Yuma.  Held annually to celebrate Black History Month, the event will feature the local talent of the First Presbyterian Church Choir, Yuma Youth Choir, New Direction Ministries Inspirational Choir, Gewline Johnson and Cindy Nunn. There will also be dancers and an African art exhibit by Rosemary Hawkey.  The show starts at 4 p.m. and the doors will open at 3:30 p.m.  Tickets are $5 general admission and may be purchased in advance at the Yuma Art Center or at the door.  For further information, call 783-2423 or 373-5202.

Roxaboxen Festival

Join us 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 20 for the enchanting children's delight, the annual "Roxaboxen Festival" at Roxaboxen Park, located at 8th Street and 2nd Avenue.  The festival celebrates the wonderful book of the same name by Alice McLarren. She writes about the joy of play and having fun in the outdoors using imagination.  This year, children will be building and decorating their own Roxaboxen town.  Cost is just $2 per child and that's to cover some of the materials.  For more information, call 373-5202.

Black History Month At M.L.K. Center

Come celebrate Black History month with us at the Martin L. King Teen Center, 3rd Street and 13th Avenue, starting 4 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 24.  Participants will create different traditional dishes and works of art and celebrating the work of luminaries such as Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., Rosa Parks, Harriet Tubman, Jackie Robinson and more.  This event is free.  Call Malia at 373-5234 or 329-7480 for more information.
