Traffic On 16th Street To Shift South; 12th Street Closed; Paving To Take Place On West Side Of Avenue A

16th Street Widening - Traffic Control Shift

ADOT crews will begin to remove business access driveways and replace with temporary ones on the north side of 16th Street.  These temporary driveways will be replaced with new concrete driveways, similar to those on the south side of the street, once work is complete.  At this time business access driveway work is being conducted between the Union Pacific Railroad Bridge and Arizona Avenue.  As a result of this work, all traffic will be shifted south to allow room for crews to safely access business driveways. This will include pedestrian traffic.

Also as a result of traffic being shifted south and the work on the north side of 16th Street:

  • There will be no left turns permitted onto Riley Avenue from 16th Street.
  • Eastbound traffic wishing to access the Golden Corral, Blimpie Sub Shop, Chevron Gas Station, or Texas Roadhouse are encouraged to turn left on Arizona Avenue and use the back acess road.
  • Westbound traffic wishing to access the Super 8 Hotel, Comfort Inn Hotel, IHOP, or Burger King are encouraged to turn left on Arizona Avenue and use 17th Street to access these businesses.
  • Left turns will still be allowed from 16th Street onto both northbound and southbound Arizona Avenue.

For more information, call the project hot line at 1-877-397-5202, e-mail 16thStreetWidening@azdot.gov or visit http://www.16thStreetWidening.com/ (This link will take you to an external website that is not part of the City of Yuma official website.)

Arizona Avenue At 16th Street

Tuesday, Feb. 9, crews will apply a new oil coat to the surface of the southbound lane of Arizona Avenue approaching 16th Street from the north. Southbound traffic should detour using either 10th Street or 12th Street and either 1st Avenue or 4th Avenue. The seal is needed due to recent wet weather affecting an area that hadn't cured properly due to previous cooler weather.

Avenue A Widening

Paving between 20th Place and 24th Street is scheduled to begin next Wednesday; after that, traffic control patterns for Avenue A north of 24th Street will shift into that newly paved lanes on the west side of the avenue. Crews will also be working on finishing curbs and possibly stamp concrete in areas where medians will be placed.

12th Street Between Avenue C And 42nd Drive

12th Street remained closed as of this report between Avenue C and 42nd Drive while crews make repairs to the roadway from a sinkhole believed to be related to recent storms. No timetable for reopening is currently available.

Casa Manana Improvements

The Casa Manana Neighborhood Reconstruction Project consists of placing a storm drain system, removing and replacing the street lighting, removing the existing pavement and placing new pavement. Additionally, speed humps will be placed on Camino Alameda to mitigate existing problems with speeders.

Avenue B - Qwest

Qwest is working in isolated areas on Avenue B starting at 16th Street and moving northward toward 3rd Street.  As they move from location to location, they will be occupying at least one lane of through traffic and, at times, the center turn lane.

32nd Street And East Main Canal - Qwest

Qwest work will result in a brief closure of the right westbound lane of 32nd Street in the vicinity of the East Main Canal (between avenues A and B) for approximately one month.

1st Street - Southwest Gas

A major gas line project was scheduled in the area of 1st Avenue and the avenues between 14th Avenue and Avenue B. Gas utility crews will be installing some main lines and services through the end of April in that region. Be prepared for some lane narrowing along 1st Street in the upcoming weeks.

Upcoming Projects

40th Street Water Transmission Line, Phase 2

This project will involve installation of approximately 15,760 linear feet of 30-inch water transmission line under 40th Street between Avenue 6E and Avenue 3E, including tie-ins or stub-outs to major water distribution lines every half-mile.  This line will complete construction of major facilities needed to provide adequate water supply from the Agua Viva Water Treatment Plant to the City's service area east of Avenue 3E.
