Safe Driving Tip: California recently had a new law go into effect, which is commonly referred to as the “Move Over” law.  Arizona has had a similar law that has been in place for several years.  The “Move Over” law was enacted to prevent the injury and death of emergency personnel while on the shoulder of the roadway.  The law states you must change lanes, or slow down when passing an emergency vehicle parked on the shoulder of the road, while their emergency lights are activated.

Each year hundreds of law enforcement officers are injured or killed by passing vehicles on our nation’s roads and highways.  Between 1999 and 2008 there were over 150 law enforcement officers killed by passing motorists.

The Yuma Police Department would like to remind motorists to do their part in promoting safety by slowing down or moving over when passing emergency vehicles on the shoulder of the road.

On the Web: Roadway construction information, to include traffic restrictions, occurring within the City of Yuma, can be found on the City's website at http://www.YumaAZ.gov/news. Look for the road construction icon.
