Road Report for January 28, 2010
Date:
01/28/2010 (Last updated: 01/29/2010)Summary:
This week’s update of City of Yuma road construction projects.Contact:
12th Street Closed Due To Sinkhole
12th Street Between Avenue C and 42nd Drive
12th Street is closed between Avenue C and 42nd Drive while crews make repairs to the roadway from a sinkhole believed to be related to last week's storms. No timetable for reopening is currently available.
16th Street Widening - ADOT
ADOT crews continue working on constructing catch basins on the north side of 16th Street. Catch basins are used to catch debris before it runs into the storm drain system, reducing future required maintenance to the system.
Left turns from 16th Street onto Arizona and Riley Avenues will be prohibited during nighttime work hours. During daytime work hours, four lanes will be open to traffic as well as left turns onto Arizona and Riley Avenues.
Crews are progressing on construction of the new widened bridge over I-8. Temporary structures are in place and can be seen from I-8. Once constructed, these temporary structures will be filled with dirt to provide additional support for the bridge until further progress is made. Interstate 8 is restricted to one lane in both the eastbound and westbound directions at this time to allow crews room to work in the interstate median to construct the bridge. Speed limits have been reduced on I-8 to 45 mph through the construction zone.

Avenue A Widening
Traffic signal and water valve work is scheduled to take place Sunday in the 24th Street and Avenue A intersection, resulting in lane closures and left-turn restrictions as crews move from section to section. Traffic control is scheduled to be set up around 7 a.m. Sunday with the intent to finish by late that afternoon.
Workers are in the process of finalizing the curbs and sidewalks on the western side of the avenue. Then pavement between 20th Place and 24th Street could begin to take place; after that, traffic control patterns for northbound Avenue A at 24th Street could shift in the next couple weeks as crews adjust the length of the tapering from the right turn lane off of 24th. To do so, northbound traffic would shift into that newly paved lane on the west side of the avenue.
Casa Manana Improvements
The Casa Manana Neighborhood Reconstruction Project consists of placing a storm drain system, removing and replacing the street lighting, removing the existing pavement and placing new pavement. Additionally, speed humps will be placed on Camino Alameda to mitigate existing problems with speeders.
Avenue B - Qwest
Qwest is working in isolated areas on Avenue B starting at 16th Street and moving northward toward 3rd Street. As they move from location to location, they will be occupying at least one lane of through traffic and, at times, the center turn lane.
32nd Street and East Main Canal - Qwest
Qwest work will result in a brief closure of the right westbound lane of 32nd Street in the vicinity of the East Main Canal (between avenues A and B) for approximately one month.
1st Street - Southwest Gas
A major gas line project was due to start this week in the area of 1st Avenue and the avenues between 14th Avenue and Avenue B. Gas utility crews will be installing some main lines and services through the end of April in that region. Be prepared for some lane narrowing along 1st Street in the upcoming weeks.
Upcoming
40th Street Water Transmission Line, Phase 2
This project will involve installation of approximately 15,760 linear feet of 30-inch water transmission line under 40th Street between Avenue 6E and Avenue 3E, including tie-ins or stub-outs to major water distribution lines every half-mile. This line will complete construction of major facilities needed to provide adequate water supply from the Agua Viva Water Treatment Plant to the City's service area east of Avenue 3E.
