Residents Invited to Collect Sand Bags; Two Street Closures; Lettuce Days Schedule Changes

Yuma, Arizona - Impacts on Yuma from a winter storm system continue to mount Thursday afternoon, resulting in at least two street closures and flooding.

Streets Closed

As of 2:30 p.m., the following streets were closed:

  • 1st Avenue between 21st Street and 24th Street.
  • 28th Street between 1st Avenue and 4th Avenue.

Streets crews report that storm water retention is at or near capacity in some parts of the City limits and that while pumping continues, there's no guarantee the pumps will be able to keep up with additional rainfall.

Sand Bags Available

While the City does not anticipate precipitation levels to cause widespread flooding of resident homes, it is making sand and sand bags available as a public service and precautionary measure for those interested.  Sand bags are available at all City of Yuma Fire Department stations; additionally, sand is also available at stations 1, 4 and 5.  Fire stations are located at:

  • Fire Station 1, 298 W. 4th St.
  • Fire Station 2, 3274 S. Avenue A
  • Fire Station 3, 508 E. 25th St.
  • Fire Station 4, 2850 W. 16th St.
  • Fire Stastion 5, 6490 E. 26th St. (Araby Road near 24th Street)
  • Fire Station 6, 3151 Pinto Way

Fire Department personnel may be available to assist with sand at stations 4 and 5, depending on calls for service.

Outdoor Weekend Events

Schedules for planned outdoor weekend events are being altered as well.  According to Heritage Festivals, the annual Yuma Lettuce Days scheduled for Friday through Sunday on downtown Main Street will now be held Saturday through Monday.  All of Friday's scheduled activities have been moved to Monday, including the entertainment, ag tours, salad bar and vendors. The downtown streets will be closed through Monday at 3 p.m.

For activities planned for this weekend at City of Yuma parks facilities, please consult with event sponsors regarding any potential changes in plans.

Additionally, the City is aware of early dismissals in the Yuma Union High School District, Yuma Elementary School District 1, and the campus of Arizona Western College. The Yuma County Library District reports that all its branches are closing at 5 p.m. Thursday, with intent to open as usual on Friday.
