On Wednesday December 30, 2009 at 7:25 am a fire was reported at the Golden Corral restaurant, 590 E. 16th St. Arriving Yuma Fire Department personnel found the building full of smoke and the fire in a commercial oven at that location. The fire had been contained by the restaurant’s sprinkler system.
Firefighters confirmed the fire was out and had not spread. They used ventilation fans to clear the smoke from the building and assisted with clean up of excess water. Fire damage was limited to the oven. The cause of the fire is under investigation, but food items were in the oven and cooking.
The fire was first discovered by employees opening up the business. When they found the smoke they left the building and called 9-1-1 to report the fire. At about this time the heat generated by the fire activated the two sprinkler heads closest to the oven. The quick action of the employees reporting the fire, and the fire suppression sprinkler system, are credited with keeping the damage to a minimum.
This is the second commercial fire in Yuma this week contained by a sprinkler system, and the third in the last two months.
