On Wednesday December 23, 2009 at 5:35 pm a house on fire was reported in the 600 block of South Madison Avenue. Arriving Yuma Fire Department personnel found heavy smoke and flames coming from a house located at 633-1/2 South Madison Ave. Firefighters extinguished the fire and it did not spread to other structures.

Portions of the house sustained heavy damage. The house was vacant and not secured. The fire is believed to have been set by trespassers possibly camping in the house. Two unidentified males had been seen around the house earlier.

Vacant, abandoned, and unsecured houses can be both a fire danger and crime problem in a neighborhood. Residents should always report suspicious activity to the Police Department. Police and fire investigators were on the scene of the fire and anyone with information is asked to contact the Yuma Police Department.
