On Monday December 7, 2009 at about 4:00 pm Yuma Fire Department personnel were sent to the 1300 block of East Morrison Street regarding a “large snake” in a yard. In the backyard of 1327 E. Morrison St. firefighters found a boa constrictor type snake, approximately seven feet in length.

The snake was captured without incident (possibly due to the cold and rain at the time). It was found to have escaped from a nearby home where it had been left with a relative of the owner. The Humane Society and Arizona Game and Fish were contacted but not able to take the snake. The owner was not available, but a friend took custody of it.

This is the second time in less than six months that YFD personnel have dealt with a large snake of this kind. In July a similarly large snake was captured in the 1100 block of 8th Avenue.

The July snake removal came just days after a 2 year old Florida girl was strangled to death by a python that escaped its aquarium. Pet owners are reminded of all the risks associated with having potentially dangerous wild animals. When one of these animals escapes, they not only pose a risk to the owner, but also to residents in the surrounding community.
