Speese Area Neighbors Welcome To Show Appreciation For New Infrastructure

Yuma, Arizona - Just a couple years ago, streets in what is known as the Speese Addition were made of dirt. Now, following the area's annexation into the City of Yuma, the area boasts state-of-the-art streets, curbs, gutters, sidewalks - and street lights and fire hydrants it didn't used to have.

A ribbon-cutting ceremony will be held at 10 a.m. Friday, Nov. 20, at the corner of 11th Street and Madison Avenue. Mayor Larry Nelson, councilmembers Paul Johnson and Ema Lea Shoop, and City Administrator Mark Watson will be in attendance along with some of the neighborhood residents.

In fiscal year 2008/2009, the City of Yuma awarded a Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) to complete roadway infrastructure improvements in the low-income Speese Addition neighborhood. The project included the design and construction of two local residential streets, including curbs, gutters, sidewalks, six streetlights and five fire hydrants on Madison Avenue from 10th Street to just beyond 11th Street and on 11th Street between Maple and Madison avenues.

Previously, the streets in this neighborhood were made of dirt; there were no streetlights, sidewalks, gutters or fire hydrants. Before it was annexed into the city, this area was considered a colonia because of its lack of infrastructure.

Members of the public are welcome to attend the ribbon-cutting.
