Final Weeks Of Arizona Avenue Project; Fog Seal On 20th Street, Ponderosa
ADOT 16th Street Reconstruction
The Arizona Department of Transportation (ADOT) is widening 16th Street between just east of Arizona Avenue and Yuma Palms Parkway/Sunridge Drive. The project is scheduled to take 10 months, with completion anticipated in late summer 2010.
Traffic has been reduced to one lane in both the eastbound and westbound directions on Interstate 8 at the 16th Street exit. Temporary traffic barriers have been placed on the interstate restricting traffic to one lane allowing crews and equipment to safely access areas under construction. Speed limits in the area have been reduced and will be strictly enforced through the construction zone.
Crews will make temporary repairs to the existing roadway beginning the week of Nov. 9. Work is scheduled to take place at night to limit impacts on traffic. Work will be conducted behind temporary barricades on the south side of 16th Street. The eastbound lane will remain open to traffic during repairs; however, motorists can expect delays as repairs may require intermittent closures of the roadway.
Crews will begin work on concrete columns, pier footings, and bridge abutments on Tuesday, Nov. 10. The new concrete columns will be poured to support the new 16th Street bridge deck. Bridge work will be just south of 16th Street, adjacent to I-8. Work is being conducted off the roadway and is not anticipated to affect traffic.

16th - Arizona Intersection Improvements
The intersection of 16th and Maple has reopened, along with right-turn access into Wendy's/Liquid Fuels. The intersection of 16th and Arizona Avenue is nearing completion, but Arizona remains closed south of 16th Street for work on the 1600 block of Arizona. Paving will take place over the next two to three weeks, with the goal of finishing the roadway and reopening Arizona Avenue by the end of the month, possibly even Thanksgiving week.
DPE, a local contractor working for the City of Yuma, is expanding the intersection of 16th Street and Arizona Avenue to include 6 lanes of traffic on 16th Street plus additional turn lanes, and turn lanes on Arizona Avenue as well.
Avenue A Widening
Demolition and reconstruction continues on the west side of Avenue A between 16th and 24th streets. Due to differences in grade, there will be no westbound traffic from Avenue A onto residential streets south of 16th Street through 19th Street.
The overall project involves the widening of Avenue A to double the current number of through-traffic lanes as well as intersection improvements at 16th Street and 24th Street and a water main improvement just south of 24th Street. Through traffic during the duration of this project is advised to used 4th Avenue or Avenue B for north-south travel when possible. Motorists detouring through surrounding residential neighborhoods or who are using 8th Avenue are asked to please observe residential street speed limits of 25 mph.
24th Street At 6th Avenue - Southwest Gas
Southwest Gas will repair a gas line along westbound 24th Street from the Fry's parking lot to 6th Avenue. Westbound traffic will be reduced to one lane, and left turns will be prohibited from eastbound 24th Street to the western driveway of the Fry's lot. Work is currently scheduled for Nov. 10 through Dec. 6.
Fog Sealant
The City of Yuma's 2009 fall fog seal program is under way through approximately the second week of December. Fog seal is a fresh oil spray used to extend the life of street pavement 3 to 5 years. Next week, fog sealing will affect the following streets:
