Tours Will Be Held Saturday Mornings

Yuma, Arizona - Walking tours showcasing the amazing effort and results from the restoration of the Yuma East Wetlands proved so popular in previous years, they will start a few weeks earlier this season.

Beginning on Saturday, Nov. 14, the Yuma Crossing National Heritage Area will host guided walking tours of the restored area east of the Ocean-to-Ocean Bridge.  Tours will begin at 9 a.m. on Saturdays through the end of March 2010.

Each guided tour will feature discussion of the wetlands restoration process as well as an inside look at how the landscape is changing.

"People have heard about the East Wetlands but don't know much about it," said Charles Flynn, Executive Director of the Yuma Crossing National Heritage Area.  "This is a chance to see firsthand how the landscape is being reshaped, bringing new wildlife and waterfowl to the restored marshes and forests. It will surprise people how Yuma is reconnecting with the Colorado River."

Those wishing to take the tour should convene at the upper parking lot of the Yuma Territorial Prison State Historic Park, 1 Prison Hill Road in downtown Yuma.

The walk will be approximately 2 to 3 miles. Participants should bring a hat, bottled water and comfortable walking shoes that can get dirty. Please dress comfortably and appropriately for the day's weather.

For further information, call Stephanie McCormick at (928) 287-9137, or the Yuma Crossing National Heritage Area Office at (928) 373-5198.
