On Monday November 2, 2009 just before 9:30 am, a report was received of a citrus worker being attacked by a swarm of bees in the area of Engler Avenue and San Marcos Drive. Yuma Fire Department personnel arriving on the scene found that the attack had occurred in a citrus grove along Avenue 2 ½ E and located the male victim near there. He was treated at the scene for multiple bee stings and transported to Yuma Regional Medical Center.

The injured laborer was part of a group working in the citrus grove when the swarm was disturbed. The bees continued to be a threat to other workers in the area, as well as being in an area near to schools. Because of the continued threat, firefighters in protective gear used foam to spray and destroy the swarm.

Fire Departments do respond in situations involving bees, but only in life safety matters when people are being attacked or they have been injured. You should always be aware of your surroundings and alert for potential threats.
