ADOT 16th Street Reconstruction

The Arizona Department of Transportation (ADOT) is widening 16th Street between just east of Arizona Avenue and Yuma Palms Parkway/Sunridge Drive. The project is scheduled to take 10 months, with completion anticipated in late summer 2010.

Traffic has been reduced to one lane in both the eastbound and westbound directions on Interstate 8 at the 16th Street exit. Temporary traffic barriers have been placed on the interstate restricting traffic to one lane allowing crews and equipment to safely access areas under construction. Speed limits in the area have been reduced and will be strictly enforced through the construction zone. Restricted lanes are expected to reopen in February 2010.

As a result of the temporary traffic barriers in place, an 11-foot width restriction is enforced through the zone. All traffic exceeding 11 feet will be required to exit the interstate at 16th Street and re-enter using the on- and off-ramps.

Crews are working on new bridge foundations just north of 16th Street adjacent to I-8. Beginning Monday, Nov. 2, crews will begin work on the south side of the bridge to construct new bridge foundations similar to those under construction on the north side. This work includes drilling large holes, stabilizing with steel rebar, and filling with a concrete mixture. Work is being conducted off the roadway and is not anticipated to affect traffic.

Over the past weekend, ADOT crews successfully demolished the existing pedestrian bridge as well as the north and south portions of the 16th Street roadway bridge. A temporary walkway has been constructed for safe pedestrian access on the bridge. The photos below show a before and after look at the area where there was once a pedestrian bridge.

Remember that left turns are not permitted off of 16th Street between Arizona Avenue and Yuma Palms Parkway for the safety of all motorists. Traffic control barriers are in place to guide traffic safely through the construction zone. Restricting left turns maintains the flow of traffic through the construction zone and helps reduce unnecessary congestion. Please obey all signage to help keep the construction zone safe for both motorists and crew members.

16th - Arizona Intersection - Maple Re-Opening

The intersection of 16th and Maple has reopened, allowing right-turn access into Wendy's/Liquid Fuels. The intersection of 16th and Arizona Avenue is nearing completion, but Arizona remains closed south of 16th Street for work on the 1600 block of Arizona.

DPE, a local contractor working for the City of Yuma, is expanding the intersection of 16th Street and Arizona Avenue to include 6 lanes of traffic on 16th Street plus additional turn lanes, and turn lanes on Arizona Avenue as well. The contractor plans to use an aggressive timetable for construction, with the goal of finishing months earlier than the expected estimated completion time frame of May 2010. To accomplish this, work will be done during expanded hours and weekends.

Avenue A Widening

Demolition and reconstruction continues on the west side of Avenue A between 16th and 24th streets. Due to differences in grade, there will be no westbound traffic from Avenue A onto residential streets south of 16th Street through 19th Street.

The overall project involves the widening of Avenue A to double the current number of through-traffic lanes as well as intersection improvements at 16th Street and 24th Street and a water main improvement just south of 24th Street. Through traffic during the duration of this project is advised to used 4th Avenue or Avenue B for north-south travel when possible. Motorists detouring through surrounding residential neighborhoods or who are using 8th Avenue are asked to please observe residential street speed limits of 25 mph.

Avenue 4E At 36th Street

Avenue 4E was expected to reopen Friday between 32nd and 40th streets following work at the site of the future public safety training facility at 36th Street.

Fog Sealant - 12th Street, Pioneer Park

The City of Yuma's 2009 fall fog seal program is under way through approximately the second week of December. Fog seal is a fresh oil spray used to extend the life of street pavement 3 to 5 years. Next week, fog sealing will affect 12th Street between avenues B and C. From Tuesday through Friday (Nov. 3-6), 12th Street will be reduced to one lane of travel in each direction working hours of 6 a.m. to 2 p.m. Also, sealing will take place in the Pioneer Park subdivision along the following streets:

  • 21st Street, 21st Place, 21st Lane, 33rd Drive and 36th Drive on Tuesday and Wednesday.
  • 34th Drive, 36th Drive, 20th Place and 20th Lane on Thursday and Friday.

48th Street/County 13th Street Between 3E And 4E

Starting in November, City 48th Street/County 13th Street will be closed between avenues 3E and 4E for private street reconstruction work that includes a new turn lane. Detour by using 40th Street.

Kofa High School driveway at 32nd Street

Those of you who will use the Kofa High School parking lot for the big anniversary game, please keep in mind that left turns onto 32nd Street from the south end of the Kofa campus are now prohibited. Eastbound access to 32nd Street can be reached from the east Kofa driveway, turning right (south) onto Avenue A and making a left turn onto 32nd Street at the traffic signal.
