Volunteers Set To Spruce Up Homes As Part Of National Make A Difference Day

Yuma, Arizona - The City of Yuma is among the organizations participating in the Rock and Roll Paint-a-Thon as part of National Make A Difference Day on Saturday, Oct. 24.

Led by efforts of its Neighborhood Services Division, the City of Yuma is teaming up with Yuma County, Western Arizona Council of Governments (WACOG), Services Maximizing Independent Living and Empowerment (SMILE) and a Phoenix organization known as Rebuilding Together to paint the homes of low-income elderly and disabled individuals spread throughout western Yuma County from 8 a.m. to noon Saturday.

"We received some huge volunteer contributions from Olive Garden and Allied Waste this year," noted Marisela Valle-Erlenbach, Senior Neighborhood Services Specialist for the City of Yuma.  Both groups have sponsored homes in this year's paint-a-thon and will have teams of volunteers working under them.

In addition to those two businesses and sponsors City of Yuma, SMILE and WACOG, other organizations that sponsored homes to be painted by volunteers this year include Project PPEP, San Luis High School, Accent Care, Yuma County Adult Probation and San Luis Fire Department.

Once the painting is done, volunteers will convene at the Martin Luther King Jr. Neighborhood Center to be treated to a "thank you" picnic lunch put on by the Culinary Arts Club from Yuma High School.

Even though teams of volunteers have been established, individuals who want to take part can find a home to help paint, but must do so on Friday in order to know where to go.

To volunteer, Rebuilding TogetherTM web site or call Alma Clark at WACOG, (928) 782-1886, Ext. 158.
