On Tuesday October 20, 2009 just before 4:30 pm a fire was reported in the 1900 block of South Maple Avenue. Arriving Yuma Fire Department personnel found a mobile home at 1947 South Maple Avenue fully involved with heavy flames and smoke coming from it. The fire had already begun to spread to a house next to the fire.

The flames were quickly knocked down but the mobile home and contents were considered a total loss. A passenger car parked next to the home was also on fire and heavily damaged. The fire was stopped from spreading to other trailers in the park, but the neighboring house did sustain some damage. Firefighters continued to deal with hot spots and flair ups for approximately an hour. Firefighting efforts were initially complicated by live power lines down around the structure.

The mobile home’s 4 residents were home at the time of the fire. The 3 adults and a 16 year old juvenile were able to escape without injury. 3 family dogs were reported to have died in the fire. Fire investigators were called to the scene but a cause has not been determined.

Besides Yuma Fire Department personnel, an engine from the MCAS Yuma Structural Fire Department also assisted at the fire scene.
