Avenue A East Side Relief Coming; Delays On 16th Street Bridge

ADOT 16th Street Reconstruction

A contractor working for the Arizona Department of Transportation (ADOT) is widening 16th Street between just east of Arizona Avenue and Yuma Palms Parkway/Sunridge Drive. The project is scheduled to take 10 months, with completion anticipated in late summer 2010.

ADOT crews have rescheduled the demolition of the I-8 pedestrian bridge, as well as the northern and southern outer portions of the I-8 roadway bridge, originally scheduled to begin Thursday, Oct. 15. Work has been rescheduled to the following week and will be conducted between the hours of 8 p.m. and 8 a.m. Thursday, Oct. 22 through Sunday, Oct. 25, and between 8 p.m. and 6 a.m. on Monday, Oct. 26 and Tuesday, Oct. 27. This work is scheduled to last 5 days and is expected to be complete by Tuesday, Oct. 27 at 6 a.m.

During nighttime work hours all eastbound and westbound traffic on I-8 will be diverted around the bridge using the 16th Street exit and entrance ramps. Traffic will be required to exit and reenter the interstate at 16th Street. Traffic will not be diverted during daytime hours between 8 a.m. and 8 p.m. on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday and between 6 a.m. and 8 p.m. on Monday. Brief delays may be experienced as vehicles pass through the area.

Remember that left turns are not permitted off of 16th Street between Arizona Avenue and Yuma Palms Parkway for the safety of all motorists. Traffic control barriers are in place to guide traffic safely through the construction zone. Restricting left turns maintains the flow of traffic through the construction zone and helps reduce unnecessary congestion. Please obey all signage to help keep the construction zone safe for both motorists and crew members.

16th - Arizona Intersection Improvements

Arizona Avenue remains closed south of 16th Street and 16th Street has one lane of traffic open in each direction at this intersection.

DPE, a local contractor working for the City of Yuma, is expanding the intersection of 16th Street and Arizona Avenue to include 6 lanes of traffic on 16th Street plus additional turn lanes, and turn lanes on Arizona Avenue as well. The contractor plans to use an aggressive timetable for construction, with the goal of finishing months earlier than the expected estimated completion time frame of May 2010. To accomplish this, work will be done during expanded hours and weekends.

Avenue A Widening

North-south traffic along the avenue between 16th and 24th streets will travel along the east-side lanes while demolition and reconstruction continues on the west side of Avenue A. Due to differences in grade, there will be no westbound traffic from Avenue A onto residential streets south of 16th Street through 19th Street. Access will be maintained into apartment complexes west of Avenue A and south from 20th Street.

The overall project involves the widening of Avenue A to double the current number of through-traffic lanes as well as intersection improvements at 16th Street and 24th Street and a water main improvement just south of 24th Street. Through traffic during the duration of this project is advised to used 4th Avenue or Avenue B for north-south travel when possible. Motorists detouring through surrounding residential neighborhoods or who are using 8th Avenue are asked to please observe residential street speed limits of 25 mph.

48th Street/ County 13th Street Between 3E And 4E

Starting in November, City 48th Street/County 13th Street will be closed between avenues 3E and 4E for private street reconstruction work that includes a new turn lane. Detour by using 40th Street.

Avenue A Between Palmcroft And 32nd Street

Avenue A will be without a center left-turn lane between Palmcroft Drive and 32nd Street as southbound traffic moves to that center lane to allow APS to relocate power lines. This project is expected to wrap up next week.
