On Wednesday October 14, 2009 at 4:40 pm a fire was reported in the 7200 block of East 26th Place. Arriving Yuma Fire Department units found smoke coming from a home at 7231 East 26th Place. A fire was located in a bedroom closet and quickly extinguished. The fire damage was contained to the closet with light smoke damage to other parts of the home.

The fire was first discovered when neighbors heard smoke alarms going off and notified an off duty YFD firefighter living near by. Firefighter Gary Welch went to the home and saw the smoke. He called 9-1-1 and ensured that everyone was out of the house. The fire was determined to have been caused by a 5 year old child playing with a lighter.

Children playing with fire are a regular cause of fire in the Yuma area. Children must be taught the dangers of fire, have fire starting tools secured in their homes, and be properly supervised at all times. The Yuma Fire Department participates in the Juvenile Fire Setters program of educating children and parents to the dangers and consequences of child fire play. For more information about this program, contact Fire Inspector Kayla Holiman at 373-4850.
