Special Celebration Oct. 31

Yuma, Arizona - The ancient Aztec celebration, Día de los Muertos, returns to the Yuma Civic Center from noon to 4 p.m.  Saturday, Oct. 31, with a Mass at 11 a.m.  Admission is free and everyone is invited to participate.

One of the traditions associated with Día de los Muertos is the creation of altars, or ofrendas, to honor those who have passed on. This tradition of music, food and remembrance will feature an altar-creation competition, as well as workshops and classes teaching culturally related arts and crafts such as sugar skull painting and decorating, mask making, and creating papel picado. Participants will be entertained throughout the day by dancers and musicians from the area playing traditional and modern music.

Día de los Muertos is a shopper's delight with arts and crafts vendors and a variety of traditional Mexican food vendors.

Día de los Muertos 2009 is sponsored by the City of Yuma, Yuma Civic Center, Clarion Suites, Fox 9, Cultural Council of Yuma and Arizona Commission on the Arts.

Sponsorship opportunities are still available. For information on becoming a sponsor, food vendor or arts vendor, please contact Stephanie McMillin at (928) 373-5043 or via e-mail.
